AUBURNDALE, FL – A motorcyclist died after a fiery collision with a pickup truck in Polk County Tuesday night, the Daily Ridge reports.
The incident occurred at the intersection of Old Dixie Highway and the Polk Parkway exit ramp in Auburndale. According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, a motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it struck the Dodge Ram pickup as it turned from the exit ramp onto Old Dixie Highway at about 9:45 p.m. The impact caused both vehicles to go up in flames.
First responders extinguished the fire and found the motorcyclist dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released. Investigators said the motorcycle had no lights on prior to the accident, and added that the rider was not wearing a helmet.
The driver of the pickup, 52-year-old William Wendel of Auburndale, was not injured in the wreck.
Authorities shut down Old Dixie Highway for about four hours while the crash scene was being cleared.
