GREATER THONOTOSASSA, FL – A fatal collision involving four vehicles and a pedestrian was reported on US 301 near McIntosh Rd Monday.
According to ABC Action News, the crash began around 2:50 a.m. when a 32-year-old woman driving an SUV north on US 301 drifted into the southbound lanes and hit a pickup truck, causing the pickup truck to rotate to the shoulder before catching on fire.
A 53-year-old male pedestrian who was in the area attempted to help the people involved in the initial crash when a 69-year-old semi-truck driver heading north on US 301 crashed into the SUV and the pedestrian. The semi-truck driver then struck a pickup truck that was heading south.
First responders pronounced the SUV driver dead at the scene. The man and woman in the second vehicle were airlifted to an area hospital with serious injuries. The pedestrian was also airlifted to a hospital, where he later died. The semi-truck driver suffered minor injuries, and the fourth vehicle driver was uninjured.
The incident is under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
