LAKELAND, FL – The city of Lakeland released information about an SUV crash early Sunday morning that left one teenager dead and another injured.
Officials said the driver of a Ford Expedition lost control on Sleepy Hill Road while approaching the intersection with Kennedy Boulevard at about 3:40 a.m. The vehicle crashed into a tree in the median, according to police.
Police and rescue crews responded but were unable to save the 17-year-old male driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The 17-year-old female passenger sustained injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, and was taken to Lakeland Regional Health.
Investigators do not believe excessive speed was a factor in the wreck. Sleepy Hill Road was closed for about six hours during the investigation.
