LUTZ, FL – A single-vehicle crash left two men dead and shut down a stretch of U.S. Highway 41 in Hillsborough County Tuesday morning.
The accident happened south of County Line Road shortly before 3:30 a.m., according to WFLA. Investigators with the Florida Highway Patrol said a 22-year-old driver was speeding when he lost control of the car while trying to negotiate a curve. The vehicle entered the center median and slammed into a tree.
The driver, a Wesley Chapel resident, and a passenger in the back seat, a 24-year-old Zephyrhills man, were both pronounced dead at the scene.
A front-seat passenger, a 22-year-old Tampa man, was listed in critical condition after being taken to a local hospital.
U.S. 41 was shut down in both directions at Bellamere Palms Court for several hours while emergency crews and state troopers responded to the crash scene.
