ST. PETERSBURG, FL – Tampa Bay Times reports that a traffic accident that took place on the 6300 block of Pinellas Bay sent two men to the hospital Thursday.
Jesus Refugio Cortes, 43, was driving a Ford F-350 truck, when his vehicle went off the road and struck a utility box and a signpost. The truck then drove over a ditch before crashing into a palm tree.
The crash sent the pieces of wood into an excavator operated by Howard Hugh Powell, 46. The pieces of timber struck Powell in the chest and abdomen.
First responders arrived on the scene around 9 a.m. and transported Powell in critical condition to Bayfront Health. Cortes was also hospitalized with minor injuries.
Authorities do not believe impairment was a factor in the collision.
