LAKE WALES, FL – The Lake Wales Police Department said it responded to a crash that left three people hospitalized early Tuesday morning.

The accident, involving a van and a tractor-trailer, occurred on U.S. Highway 27 at Chalet Suzanne Road at about 5 a.m. Police said a Freightliner hauling a flatbed trailer of sod was proceeding through the intersection with the green light when it was rear-ended by a Honda van.

The driver of the van, 53-year-old Wilfreda Cesario of Avon Park, was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center in critical condition. Two passengers in the van, a 55-year-old woman and a 17-year-old boy, were hospitalized but they were not seriously injured.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, 31-year-old Luis Ramos, was not injured.

The roadway was reopened about three hours after the wreck. No information was released on whether any charges will be filed.
