MULBERRY, FL – A man is facing drunk driving charges following a crash that killed a young boy in Polk County over the weekend.
WFLA reports emergency crews responded to the scene in the area of State Road 60 and Coronet Road in Mulberry just after midnight Sunday.
Investigators said 42-year-old Andres Orozco was towing a trailer with a pickup truck when he pulled out in front of a vehicle driven by 30-year-old Mario Martinez on State Road 60, and the vehicles collided.
A 12-year-old boy in Orozco’s vehicle was pronounced dead at a local hospital while another passenger, a 14-year-old boy, was hospitalized with a broken collar bone. Both are from Plant City. Orozco was hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
Martinez, whose vehicle caught fire, was taken to the hospital for treatment and then was arrested on multiple charges, including DUI manslaughter and DUI crash with serious injury.
Detectives said Martinez had the right of way prior to the crash. Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident.
