TAMPA, FL – Four people were hurt Sunday in a multi-vehicle accident that involved a Tampa police patrol vehicle, according to Fox 13 Tampa Bay.
The Florida Highway Patrol said a 22-year-old driver lost control of his vehicle on I-275 south just before noon and crashed into the rear of a car driven by a 21-year-old, with both vehicles hitting a guardrail. One of the vehicles then struck the marked police SUV, which had been stopped with its emergency lights on a shoulder of the highway. A fourth vehicle, driven by a 72-year-old Kentucky man, slowed down but could not stop and struck the 21-year-old’s car.
The 21-year-old, from St. Petersburg, was seriously injured, while a passenger in his car sustained minor injuries. The 34-year-old police officer and the 22-year-old driver also had minor injuries.
The accident shut down southbound I-275 near the exit for downtown Tampa for about two hours while the wreckage was being cleared from the scene.
Police cited the 22-year-old for careless driving.
