ST. PETERSBURG, FL – A bicyclist was killed when he was hit by a FedEx truck near an intersection in northwest St. Petersburg on Tuesday evening, WTSP reports.
The cyclist was headed north on 71st Street N past 50th Avenue N when he was struck from behind by the truck, which spun out and collided with the driver’s side of a southbound van. Emergency responders arrived to find the motor vehicles on the west shoulder and the bicyclist in a nearby driveway.
They rushed him to an area hospital, where he died yesterday morning. He has been identified only as a 54-year-old man from the United Kingdom.
The driver of the van was unhurt, as were the driver and a passenger in the FedEx truck.
The truck’s driver told police that he could not see the cyclist at first due to his dark clothing. He said that he tried to avoid a collision, but his vehicle slid on the wet pavement and struck the bicyclist anyway.
