HERNANDO, FL – A man is in custody, a woman is dead, and two other people are injured following a wrong-way collision on SR-200 yesterday evening, Fox 13 reports.
David Michael Kahler, 38, was driving south on N Carl G. Rose Highway/SR-200 when he veered into oncoming traffic ahead of the intersection with Lecanto Highway at 6 p.m. Monday. A sedan veered out of the way of his pickup truck, instead striking a mailbox on the right-hand side of the freeway. The pickup subsequently collided head-on with an SUV.
The 33-year-old woman driving the sedan died at the scene. Police say she had been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The SUV’s driver, a 28-year-old woman from Ocala, was seriously injured, while her 3-year-old female passenger suffered only minor injuries.
Kahler is in custody and facing charges of DUI manslaughter, DUI serious injury, DUI property damage, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
