BRANDON, FL – State troopers say a crash involving an alleged drunk driver killed a woman in Hillsborough County on Friday afternoon.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, 41-year-old Mario Charles Gonzalez was arrested on a charge of DUI manslaughter following the incident, which occurred on an Interstate 75 frontage road at about 2:50 p.m. The Florida Highway Patrol said Gonzalez was driving a pickup truck approaching the exit ramp for State Road 60 when he attempted to avoid traffic that had come to a stop ahead of him.

Gonzalez lost control of the vehicle, which swerved into the shoulder, re-entered the highway and hit the side of a semi-trailer. The pickup flipped over and a passenger in the vehicle was ejected. The passenger, a 27-year-old Wesley Chapel woman, died of her injuries at an area hospital.

Gonzalez was arrested and taken to the Hillsborough County Jail.
