SARASOTA, FL – The Florida Highway Patrol said four people were struck and killed by a car Thursday night along a highway in Sarasota, WWSB reports.

The victims had been in a pickup truck that had a flat tire on I-75 south near Fruitville Road just before 10 p.m. The pickup stopped on the shoulder of the road and the seven people inside got out to try to change the tire, state troopers said.

At that point a 34-year-old woman driving a sedan veered onto the shoulder, hitting four of the people and the pickup. The four male victims were all pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not yet been released. The three others who had been in the pickup, ages 19 to 22, were not hurt in the crash. The driver of the car, a Lakeland resident, and her 32-year-old passenger were not injured.

Authorities shut down the southbound lanes of I-75 for over five hours while investigators and emergency crews were working the scene.

The crash remains under investigation, and any witnesses were asked to contact the Florida Highway Patrol.
