LAKELAND, FL – Law enforcement authorities are trying to track down the driver responsible for hitting two teenage girls, one fatally, in Polk County last weekend.
According to WFTS, the crash happened on the evening of the Fourth of July on New Tampa Highway near Clark Road in Lakeland. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said the two 14-year-old girls were walking on the north shoulder of the road when they were hit from behind by a pickup truck.
One of the girls died of her injuries on Tuesday, while the other victim sustained minor injuries.
The sheriff’s office said the driver of the pickup kept going westbound toward Hillsborough County without stopping to check on the girls who had been hit.
Investigators describe the vehicle they are looking for as white Ford-F150 (1997-2003) that should have damage to the grill and some other possible front-end damage. Anyone with information regarding the incident was asked to contact the Polk County Sheriff’s Office
