CLEARWATER, FL – An elderly man was rescued after he was injured in a boat accident in the waters off Sanibel Island Thursday.
According to WINK News, the U.S. Coast Guard responded to the scene after the man’s boat was involved in a collision with another vessel about 30 miles west of the island at about 6:30 p.m. A Coast Guard helicopter from the Clearwater air station and a Coast Guard response boat from Fort Myers Beach were involved in the rescue operation.
The 83-year-old victim sustained a leg injury and was flown to Tampa General Hospital. His boat, which was rendered inoperable, was towed back to shore while the other vessel was escorted back by the Coast Guard.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission is investigating the accident.
