HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL – Monday morning’s accident on I-275 was caused by a semi truck making an illegal U-turn, the Tampa Bay Times reports. Traffic was backed up for hours as emergency responders cleared the wreck.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the accident occurred at about 4:50 a.m. Monday when the driver of the semi attempted to make a U-turn from the northbound to the southbound lanes of I-275. A 55-year-old Safety Harbor man struck the left side of the tractor trailer with his white van and was seriously injured. Photos of the incident show that the front half of the van was completely demolished.
