WINTER HAVEN, FL – A woman and her grandson were killed in a collision at an intersection in Polk County Monday evening, reports Fox 13 News.
The two-vehicle wreck occurred in the vicinity of U.S. Highway 27 and Cypress Gardens Boulevard in Winter Haven.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said 45-year-old Tanya Chewning of Auburndale was driving a Honda Civic when she stopped at a red light on Cypress Gardens Boulevard at about 6:35 p.m. When the light turned green, she crossed over the southbound lanes of U.S. 27 to make a left turn and head north.
According to investigators, the driver of a southbound Jeep Renegade did not stop at the red light and crashed into the Civic on the driver’s side. Chewning and her 13-year-old grandson were found dead at the scene. The 44-year-old driver of the Renegade and her 1-year-old granddaughter sustained minor injuries.
Detectives with the sheriff’s office are investigating the cause of the accident, and no charges were immediately filed in the case.
